Shoe Box Project - St.Paul's Church

Shoe Box Project Update - 28 March 2006

Southbank Bristol Arts are just beginning to hear about some people's ideas for the Shoe Box exhibition. For example, a shoe box containing a baby's first shoes complete with early photos, ideas to do with walking (it could be with your dog), some shoes made from unusual materials like matchsticks or wire, or very simple things that can be found in most kitchens like jelly, seeds, cut up olive oil tins etc. Photographs of your favourite shoes, photographs of footprints on the beach would all be welcome.

You don't have to be an artist to be involved. If you can bake a cake, sew, knit, grow plants you could use any of these skills and any others you have to create something for your shoe box or boxes. Basically, anything goes.

The SBA really wants to celebrate the spirit of our community and this exhibition is dependent on people taking part. We would welcome contributions from families, including aunties, uncles and grandparents. This is a non-competitive exhibition, the more the merrier, so do take part.

Mary Corum has been talking to local schools and we are looking forward to seeing the children's ideas for the shoe boxes.

'Celebrating creativity in our neighbourhood' is the SBA mission statement. This exhibition will surprise visitors to the Arts Trail and delight ourselves with a sense of fun, inventiveness and creativity.

Don't forget that if you need any help or advice with your shoe box re: materials, actual shoe boxes, subject matter or ideas then please phone Tony Eastman on 0117 9667363.

The Shoe Box Project - 'Thinking inside and around the box'

A community project for the Southbank Arts Trail on May 20th and 21st 2006

About the project

The Southbank Arts Trail plan to hold an exhibition of shoe boxes which have been 'changed' in some way. The project is open to all our SBA members whatever your medium, it is also open to SBA family and friends. The results of the project will be exhibited at the Crypt, St Paul’s Church, Corononation Road during the Arts Trail.

What do we do with the shoe box?

We would like people to think about ideas that revolve around shoes, shoe boxes, walking etc.

  1. Have Fun! You can fill your box, decorate it, post it, deconstruct it, write, draw and make things to place inside.

  2.  If you need further ideas look up some dictionary definitions for shoe, box, walking, or you could look up ambulatory!

  3. Search for proverbs i.e. ‘if the shoe fits’, ‘one step at a time’, ‘two left feet’.

  4. Think about travels and journeys you have made (or would like to make) these can include maps, photos, dreams, poems etc. Does the shoe box have a history? Where was it made? How was it made? How did it travel?

You can source your shoe box from local shoe shops or collect from 21 Stackpool Rd at weekends.

For further information contact Tony Eastman on 0117 9667363.

What do we do with the finished shoebox project?

  1. Labelling. When your shoe box or shoe boxes are completed please stick a label on the back with your name(s), address, telephone number and a title. If you wish you can also add a story or explanation about the work which could be placed beside it when displayed.
  2. Display. Place the fixings (for wall hanging) securely at the back of the box so it is self evident how the work should be hung. If the box needs to be placed on a table please write those instructions on the label.
  3. Deadline. Please bring your shoe box(es) to the Crypt of St. Paul's Church, Coronation Road, Southville on Friday 19 May 2006. Please deliver between 6 – 8 pm.
